Pomodori e Melanzane | Italian recipe for eggplant in tomato sauce

March 30, 2015

David Rocco, the famous Italian chef on tv, prepared this recipe in one of the episodes of his show David Rocco’s Dolce India. He gave it an Indian tadka using green chillies, coriander and garam masala. While that sounded exciting, I prefer the clean Italian flavours to mixing them with Indian fla

Recipe for Saptige – Malnad / Malenadu Flat Beans Curry

January 31, 2015

In the quest to get you some authentic and yet somewhat lesser known recipes from Karnataka, this one is a flat beans curry. This recipe is from Malnad or Malenadu and a very simple stir fry curry using fresh beans. The main flavour here is that of garlic. Since avare / chikadi kai / flat beans / Indian broad beans (yes, they have tons of names) are in season and growing in plenty in my little kitchen garden, I am happy to put them to use in whatever way possible. I served this curry with steamed rice and cucumber sassive, and the whole meal came together in less than 30 minutes. You can make a more elaborate Karnataka themed meal with the recipes I have shared this month

January 24, 2015

Continuing with our Karanataka Cuisine series this month, here’s a really quick cucumber ‘curry’ if you may call it that. It’s my kind of curry in a hurry. Goes perfectly with rice, and the mustard seeds ground into the spice paste give the mild cucumber a really good fiery kick. It is the kind of p

G is for Gothsu – Recipe for Eggplant Gothsu

April 24, 2014

My favourite pairing with Pongal is not coconut chutney or sambar but gothsu. What is this dish with a mildly tongue twister of a name, you might wonder! Hardly a favourite in my childhood, this is one of my newer loves. The aroma of brinjal roasting on the stove top is one of the strongest smells i

B for Beans Paruppu Usili

April 8, 2014

When I wrote my earlier post, A is for Avial, I had forgotten that I’d have another BIG favourite dish from our cuisine – it is Paruppu Usili. I cannot proclaim my love for this enough. And I don’t know of too many people who’ve grown up eating this, not listing it as one of their top favourites. I
