Recipe for Kanda-Kairi Chutney – Onion and Raw Mango Chutney

July 27, 2015

What’s the best way to jazz up an Indian meal? I’d say “condiments”. Chutneys, pickles, podis, kachumber added to a couple of vegetables, dal, rotis and rice can turn your dish into a full fledged Indian thaali. Goodness, my mouth waters even as I type out these words! Sigh, there’s no hope for me :-/

Recipe for Fajeto – Gujarati Mango Kadhi

June 19, 2015

Before the mango season says its final goodbyes for 2015, I want want want you to try this Gujarati Kadhi called Fajeto. I’m a big fan of Guju food (and I don’t mean the Rajdhani type thaalis). Basic homemade dal-bhaath-shaak-rotli, like they call it, meaning dal-rice-veggies-roti, is such a delight to the tastebuds. I love the mild sweetness in the dishes that comes from adding some sugar or jaggery, in the cuisine from some parts of Gujarat. It is said that it is used to balance the slight bitter taste from the hard water in these parts

April 9, 2014

Source: Wikimedia commons Chow chow doesn’t mean eating twice. It is the name of a squash. Tambrahms and their obsession with all vegetables of the gourd family is legendary. Such a gourd-loving community we are. Give us a gourd and we’ll make a koottu, a curry or a thogayal out of it and call it a

Summer Recipes : Dudhi / Bottlegourd Raita

March 29, 2014

Bottle Gourd is a boring vegetable, no doubt. There is hardly a person who loves it. It’s one of those “damn! it’s dudhi for lunch today” kind of vegetables, very difficult to glam up or make delicious. It has no flavour of its own, so when fried into a kofta or made into a spicy koottu, it is somew

My grandaunt’s recipe for Mango Moar Kuzhambu : Tamil style Ripe Mango Kadhi

May 30, 2013

Last week I was in Chennai, I had the good fortune to eat at my grandaunt’s place. She is my father’s Maami, around 75 years of age and she is one of the best cooks in our family and even a simple weekday meal at her place will pretty much end up being a feast because of the number of dishes on the

Molaga Maanga – an instant raw mango pickle

May 8, 2013

This was the only pickle I liked as a kid, which I had fondly christened- ‘square maanga’ because it was cut in a square dice. In the hot summers of Bombay, curd rice would taste divine anyway. A tiny bit of this square maanga with the curd rice would always take it to another level of divine. Often
