Recipe for Date Pancakes: A healthy treat for kids
Kids love pancakes, don’t they? These healthy date pancakes are an attempt to punch some more wholesome nutrition into a dish kids love. Cinnamon and coconut add some extra flavour to the pancakes. Try substituting half the wheat flour with oat flour or any millet flour. Other healthy pancakes that your kids might love are these oatmeal pancakes or these citrusy orange pancakes.
This recipe is high in fibre due to whole wheat flour and dates, rich in iron from jaggery and dates. Excellent for kids who refuse to eat chapatis, and tasty nutrition for pregnant women.

If you don’t have cinnamon powder on hand, by all means use cardamom powder or fresh grated nutmeg for an appetising aroma and taste.
For dessert make it richer by drizzling honey over warm pancakes or dusting powdered sugar. Serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a blob of sweetened whipped cream for extra deliciousness.
Healthy Date pancakes
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 3 tbsps jaggery grated
- 1.5 cups buttermilk thinned yogurt can be used
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 2 tbsps coconut grated -fresh / dehydrated
- pinch cinnamon powder
- 2 tbsps date puree*
- 2 tbsps raisins optional
- pinch salt
- butter or oil for cooking
Instructions
- To prepare date pancakes, mix all the dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
- Whisk the date puree into the buttermilk.
- Slowly add the date-buttermilk with constant stirring to avoid lumps. The consistency of the batter should be such that it sticks to the back of the ladle after mixing. Mix in chocochips if using.
- Grease a non stick pan with few drops of vegetable oil / butter.
- Once pan is hot, add a couple of tablespoons of batter and spread into pancake.
- Cook on both sides till golden brown using a little oil/ butter.

I am a beginner in cooking. Just trying to make date pancakes you didn’t mention how many dates I have to use
You can use readymade date puree 2 tbsp – or else soak 8-10 dates and make puree out of it, any less and the mixer will not grind to a paste. Use the leftover puree to sweeten any other dish like oats porridge or so. Hope this helps.
