I made a few substitutions in the original – increasing milk to one cup and oil to 1/4 cup, plus using whole wheatflour (atta) – and the result was a very soft cake. I guess the date puree itself gives a soft texture, for the same reason as apple sauce.
Also I used organicjaggery instead of sugar, pureeing it with the soaked dates. Next time, I will lessen the jaggery used – as the dates provided enough sweetness as it is.
I also topped the entire cake with shredded coconut and plenty of walnuts, adding some chopped walnuts to the batter. The taste of the walnuts cut through the sweetness of the dates, and the smelling of toasting coconut shreds while the cake was baking was pretty heavenly.
This is a kind of cake you can send in your kid’s lunch box as a snack. The dates and jaggery make it an iron rich, high-energy snack.
Do check out the original recipe at Aayi’s Recipes and I’m sure the fever will continue to spread!
Liked the twist given Shilpa’s dates cake. AS u said, it is a hit in my house too. Its absolutely foolproof.
that is a beautiful cake. dates are fabulous additions to any sweet treat.
This IS a very interesting recipe. I suspect the dates give the cake almost a brownie like texture. I would follow you lead and decrease the oil as well. I find that more often then not you can do so with no problem.
The topping looks wonderful..the cake is so tempting..i just cant stop looking at it..drooling now..
cake looks superb…i have tried eggless…but it was a flop…next time i’ll try ur version…

Good substitutions Nandita. I am going to try it your way next time. It looks good. Btw..last time, I made the cake without oil(all remaining ingredients same) and it came out very well. So you can completely leave the oil out to cut down calories :). Thanks for this lovely post 🙂

I have been toying with the idea of date cake for some time now…Thanks for inspiring me with this recipe nandita:)
This does look lovely! I use dates a lot in baking, as they can also replace some of the sweetener. Look forward to trying this one out.
Very nice. 2 things that is raring me to go try this is jaggery and wheatflour!
This looks like a fabulous combo! I made an orange date cake recently and the dates were a great addition!
I have some date syrup… will see how I can substitute something with that!! 🙂
Hi BeautifulMade it. Ate it. Loved it. though the kids refused to have anything to do with the date-walnut cake. well we didn’t ask them a second time though…It was reallly super!! Thanks again.Love
Shilpa – Will try without any of the oil next time 🙂 then it will be absolutely guiltfree.Miri- Hey, I think any citrus will be a great idea to cut through the sweetness of the cake from the dates and jaggery – i guess i will add some orange rind the next time and even some cointreau.Raaga – I’m sure that will work, you just have to adjust the solid- liquid balance in some way.SaudiS- Since you are in date land, you can make this cake ever so often…and anyway since your kids aren’t interested, go ahead and add some rum or amaretto into the cake batter – it will be even more heavenly!
Hi This is graet cake for heam-up.hey tell me if can make this cake on microwave????.-sharada

Wow seems to be a nice recipe. For the moment of truth I don’t like dates. But while seeing this delicious dish I’d give a try. I know that Dates are good for health too. Since it have no eggs even vegetarian can eat this. Thanks for the recipe that can make me love to have dates.
Hi nand,Can I use ordinary jaggery? I don’t have organic jageery.
Hey Nandita,What brand of dates did you use? Stores like hyper city have only lion dates which aren’t great.any other brand that you can suggest?
